Simple step-by-step field method, no complex tools needed.
1. Understand CT Marking
All CTs have:
-
Arrow / S → L marking
-
S = Source (Utility Grid side)
-
L = Load (Home/Main Panel/FranklinWH side)
Rule: CT arrow must point toward the load / away from utility meter.
Step 1: Check Grid Import
-
When home is using power (no PV excess):
aGate should show Grid Import (positive kW).
-
If polarity is reversed:
aGate falsely shows Grid Export even when you’re buying power from the grid.
Step 2: Check PV Export (If site allows export)
-
Midday high PV, low home load:
aGate should show Grid Export.
-
If reversed:
It shows Grid Import even when sending power back to grid.
Step 3: No-Export System Quick Check
For HECO / NEM-MT no-export sites:
-
Correct polarity: aGate holds grid power near 0kW (no export).
-
Reversed polarity: aGate misreads flow, curtails PV unnecessarily or falsely shows export.
4. Swap Test (If Reading Backwards)
If import/export is flipped in aGate:
-
Flip the CT 180° on the conductor (reverse arrow direction).
-
Check aGate real-time power flow — it will correct immediately.
-
Do same for both L1 and L2 CTs if both reversed.
5. Wiring Terminal Polarity (CT Leads)
-
CT secondary wires (black/white) must land on the correct aGate CT input terminals.
-
Swapping the two CT signal wires also reverses polarity, same as flipping the clamp.
