Troubleshooting Checklist: System Not Charging from PV or Grid
Step-by-step items to check, practical for solar/battery inverter energy storage systems.
1. Basic Power & Visual Checks
-
AC grid power is present, voltage/frequency within normal range.
-
PV array DC voltage is sufficient (no low voltage at sunrise/cloudy days).
-
All breakers, PV DC switches, AC input switches are ON.
-
No blown fuses, tripped residual current devices.
-
No loose, burnt, or overheated wiring/terminals.
2. Inverter / Hybrid System Settings, especially the custom schedule correct.
-
Confirm charging enable in custom schedule.
-
Check time schedule / charging time slots are correctly set.
-
Working mode correct.
-
Grid charge function is enabled as well as the grid charge schedule enable (many systems let you disable grid charging separately).
3. Battery & BMS Status
-
Battery voltage, temperature, and SOC are normal.
-
BMS is not in protection mode: over-temperature, under-voltage, over-current.
-
BMS communication to inverter is normal (no CAN offline fault).
-
Battery not full; if already at max SOC, system will stop charging automatically.
4. PV Side Checks
-
PV modules not shaded, dirty, or damaged.
-
PV string polarity not reversed.
-
Open-circuit voltage matches inverter input specification
-
-
No faulty PV optimizer or micro-inverter causing string shutdown.
5. Grid Side Checks
-
Grid voltage too high/low → inverter locks out charging.
-
Grid frequency out of allowed range.
-
Grid permission/anti-island protection active, blocking charging.
-
CT current sensor installed correctly (reverse CT direction stops charging).
6. Communication & Wiring
-
CAN wiring between inverter and battery correct.
-
Terminal resistance correct (120Ω at bus ends).
-
No loose communication wires causing intermittent offline.
7. Fault Codes & Logs
-
Check inverter error logs: PV fault, grid fault, battery communication fault, over-temperature.
-
If error codes exist, resolve the fault first — system will block charging until cleared.
Quick Summary
Check switches/fuses → system charging settings → battery BMS protection → PV/grid voltage limits → communication wiring → fault codes.
