Ava SmartHome Battery

Ava Community Energy and FranklinWH: Smart backup that pays you back

Ava Community Energy

What is Ava Community Energy's SmartHome Battery program?

Ava SmartHome Battery is a virtual power plant (VPP) initiative managed by Ava Community Energy. Homeowners with FranklinWH Systems are incentivized to share their aPower battery stored energy during periods of high grid demand. By connecting home energy to Ava Community Energy’s VPP, homeowners can earn money while supporting a more resilient local grid.

How does
Ava SmartHome Battery work?

Installation Rebate

(Market-Rate customers)

Homeowners enroll and receive $90 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of the selected capacity of the battery (40%, 60% or 80%). During enrollment, homeowners will select the percentage of battery capacity to share with Ava during dispatch events. FranklinWH aPower 2 and aPower S have a nameplate capacity of 15 kWh. For example, if the selected capacity is 80%, the available capacity is 12 kWh. The resulting upfront incentive is $1,080 per battery. The installation rebate can be paid directly to the homeowner or to a qualified installer. Learn more.

Installation Rebate

(Income-qualified customers)

Income-qualified homeowners enrolled in CARE or FERA receive $500 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of the selected capacity of the battery (40%, 60% or 80%). During enrollment, homeowners will select the percentage of battery capacity to share with Ava during dispatch events. FranklinWH aPower have a nameplate capacity of 15 kWh. For example, if the selected capacity is 80%, the available capacity is 12 kWh. The resulting upfront incentive is $6000 per battery. Installation rebate must be passed to a qualified installer to reduce the purchase price.

Participation Payments

During times when the grid is strained, Ava will call upon the enrolled FranklinWH Systems to share the percentage of the battery selected during enrollment. Participation payments are $3 per nominated kilowatt-hour (kWh) per month. For example, if the nominated capacity of the 15 kWh FranklinWH aPower is 80%, the resulting participation payment for the month is $36 for the month ($108 over three months). These payments are made every three months over the course of 5 years.

Number of Events

Ava will notify participating homeowners the day before an event is scheduled. Each event will occur over a 2-hour period, or until the capacity of the system is met. Ava expects up to 84 hours of events per year.
