Bring Your Own Device Plus Program

Join the Bring Your Own Device Plus (BYOD Plus) Program today and earn valuable incentives while contributing to Hawaii’s energy future.

In addition to cash bonus incentives for all participants, the program offers several other valuable benefits. These include the expansion of Net Energy Metering (NEM) export value through NEM+ additions, retail-rate equivalent crediting for non-NEM battery exports, and program transferability in the event the homeowner moves.

What Is
the BYOD Plus Program?

The Bring Your Own Device Plus (BYOD Plus) program by Hawaiian Electric rewards homeowners in Hawaii for sharing stored energy from their FranklinWH aPower battery during a two-hour daily window, to offset peak grid demand, both in the customer’s home and regionally.

Participants receive:

  • Upfront incentives based on the kilowatts committed.
  • Monthly bill credits for exported energy at the customer’s current retail rate (for NEM / NEM+) or at a rate adjusting the non-NEM export rate to retail equivalent.

Power your home, support the grid, and earn rewards. Help Hawaii reach 100% clean energy by 2045.

How Does
BYOD Plus Work?

Homeowners participating in the BYOD Plus program will go through three stages:

  • Enroll their battery
  • Select their daily battery power level
  • Get rewarded with incentives and monthly bill credits

By participating in the BYOD Plus program, homeowners receive both upfront incentives and ongoing monthly bill credits, helping to offset the cost of battery ownership while optimizing the value of their PV system generation and delivering valuable benefits to the grid.

Incentive Structure

These financial incentives make participating in Hawaii’s clean energy future both impactful and cost-effective.

Upfront Incentive
$400 per kilowatt (kW) committed to the program — with no maximum cap.
Low-to-Moderate Income (LMI) Adder
An additional $400 per kW committed ($800 / kW total) — also with no cap — for qualifying households.
MonthlyBill Credits
Provided at directly metered NEM retail rate or adjusted for an equivalent, based on an assumed amount of energy exported from the battery to the grid, added to what is directly credited at the customer’s current retail electricity rate. (The non-NEM BYOD Plus adjustment value is realized at retail equivalent when customer consumption is at least 30% of the dispatch commitment during battery power dispatch periods).
